The new drug is an expensive, highly dangerous, and potentially deadly drug that could make it impossible for patients to stay on the drug.
If approved by the Food and Drug Administration, Cialis could become the drug of choice for treating impotence in men with a penis deformity, according to a new study.
The study looked at more than 100,000 men who had undergone a radical prostatectomy in the past five years, and found that the drugs were not effective at treating impotence for up to six months.
The researchers analyzed the data from a previous study of over a thousand patients, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine. They found that the drugs were not effective at treating impotence for five years.
They also found that men who took the drugs had a lower incidence of sexual dysfunction, compared to those who were not taking the drugs.
The study was presented at the annual meeting of the American Urological Association. The results of the study have been previously published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
“The results of this study demonstrate that there is no significant difference in the effectiveness of drugs for treating impotence for up to six months,” said Dr. John H. Mabry, a urologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., who was not involved in the study.
But some men may not be able to achieve an erection for longer.
“It is more likely that some men will have difficulties maintaining an erection,” Mabry said. “They may not be able to get enough blood to fill the cavernous bodies that they need to maintain a hard erection.”
Mabry said a man’s ability to achieve and sustain an erection may depend on his age, his overall health, and the number of erectile dysfunction episodes he has.
“It will take a lot of work to get the results you’re seeing,” Mabry said.
For men who have a prostate problem, a doctor may prescribe a drug called PDE5 inhibitor, which works by blocking the action of phosphodiesterase-5, or PDE5, a protein that helps in the degradation of nerves that control blood flow to the penis. This helps maintain and grow the blood vessels in the penis.
However, if a man is taking PDE5 inhibitor, he may need to take other drugs that have been associated with a lower incidence of impotence.
Mabry said he is concerned about the safety of these drugs. The new study is part of a larger investigation of the potential effects of PDE5 inhibitors.
The researchers found that men who took PDE5 inhibitors had a significantly lower incidence of sexual dysfunction compared to those who were not taking PDE5 inhibitors.
“This study suggests that PDE5 inhibitors could have a different effect in men who have a prostate problem and who are at an increased risk of having difficulty achieving an erection,” Mabry said. “We are continuing to study the results of these studies to determine if there is a specific risk for erectile dysfunction among men who have a prostate problem and if PDE5 inhibitors may be effective.”
The PDE5 inhibitors may not be the only treatment available for impotence. Other possible treatments include surgery, radiation therapy, and some forms of surgery.
Other drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction include:
Nitroglycerin, a medicine that stimulates the production of endothelial nitric oxide in the arteries
Alprostadil, which is used to treat prostatic hyperplasia, a condition that causes enlarged prostates
Sildenafil, a medicine that is used to treat erectile dysfunction
Flomax, which is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia
Phentolamine, which treats pulmonary arterial hypertension
Although the new drug is not FDA approved for treatment of erectile dysfunction, Mabry said he has seen that patients are willing to try it for a variety of reasons.
“It is not possible to say that this drug is safe for everyone to use,” he said.
1.Nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate): Cialis and nitrates both lower blood pressure. Taking them together can cause a significant and potentially life-threatening drop in blood pressure (hypotension), leading to dizziness, fainting, or even heart attack or stroke. It is contraindicated to use Cialis with nitrates or recreational "poppers" (amyl nitrites).
2.Alpha-blockers (e.g., prazosin, terazosin, tamsulosin): Both Cialis and alpha-blockers relax blood vessels, which can lead to excessive blood pressure reduction when used together. This may result in dizziness, fainting, or orthostatic hypotension (a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing). If needed, your doctor may adjust the dosage or recommend spacing the medications.
3.Other antihypertensive drugs (e.g., atenolol, propranolol, enalapril, lisinopril): Cialis can enhance the blood-pressure-lowering effects of these medications. While this interaction is usually less severe than with nitrates or alpha-blockers, it can still cause dizziness or fainting in sensitive individuals. Close monitoring of blood pressure is recommended.
Cialis (tadalafil) can interact with certain foods and beverages, potentially altering its effectiveness or increasing the risk of side effects. Here are the key drug-food interactions to be aware of:
Cialis, tadalafil, is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. PDE5 enzymes are responsible for breaking down cGMP, which is responsible for relaxing blood vessels. Top drug interactions are usually limited to PDE5 inhibitors with alpha-blockers like PDE5 inhibitors. However, some PDE5 inhibitors include combinations of the medications (Ex. cialis, tadalafil, or phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors), highlighting their importance in daily life. PDE5 inhibitors also break down blood pressure, increasing the risk of low blood pressure. When this leads to symptoms like dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting, consult your doctor.
Ketoconazole, tadalafil, Fru-X-Flpire, or other PDE5 inhibitors can cause potentially serious side effects such as:
Whether you can take Tadalafil at the same time as your other medications will depend on which medications you are taking.
You are required to complete a short medical consultation questionnaire that asks for any medications that you are prescribed from your GP and will indicate the medications that can’t be taken alongside Tadalafil.
There are several medicines which should not be taken concurrently with Tadalafil. Medicines which can have potentially serious interactions with Tadalafil include :-
• Any alpha-blocker medicines e.g. doxazosin (Cardura), alfuzosin (Xatral), tamsulosin, terazosin, or Flomax, that you can buy in the pharmacy. (These medicines may be used to treat prostate problems or high blood pressure).
• Isosorbide mononitrate, isosorbide dinitrate, or use a GTN spray or tablets
for chest pain or use Rectogesic ointment?
• Nicorandil (Ikorel), used to treat angina
• Cimetidine, used to treat stomach or duodenal (peptic) ulcers
• Theophylline, used to treat asthma
• Antibiotics:- Clarithromycin, Erythromycin and Telithromycin
• Anti-fungals such as itraconazole and ketoconazole
• Seizure medication:- carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin and primidone
• Heart or blood pressure medication:- disopyramide, amiodarone, quinidine and procainamide
• Anti-viral medication:- telaprevir, atazanavir, retonavir, indinavir, saquinavir and cobicistat
• Recreational drugs:- amyl nitrate (poppers)
If you are taking any prescribed medication from your GP then you can simply write those in the “Is there any other medical information that you think our doctor should know?” section on the medical questionnaire. Then, our doctor will know whether the Tadalafil is safe for you to take.
